"The Earl of Dalhousie's Happy Return to Scotland" is a Scottish march in D Major.
The parts are played AA'B.
George Ramsay (1770-1838), the 9th Earl of Dalhousie was a soldier who fought with
distinction in the Napoleonic Wars. He was Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia (where he
created Dalhousie University in Halifax), then Governor General of Canada from
1819-1828. In 1815 he was created Baron Ramsay. Dalhousie subsequently became
Commander in Chief in India before his final return to Dalhousie Castle, Midlothian.
He was a staunch supporter of Scottish music, and of the Gows in particular.
The melody appears in Nathaniel Gow's (1763-1831) collection of the compositions of
his son, Neil Gow Jr. (c. 1795-1823), published posthumously in 1837.
It was recorded by Abby Newton on Crossing to Scotland (1997) and
George Wilson on Royal Circus (2000).
